How to Save a Life

Sara Zarr
Description
Jill MacSweeney may have to do something drastic if her mother persists with her current crazy idea, to adopt a baby. Its not like the two of them are close, and since her dad died a year ago they have been at each other's throats. When she thinks about it, her grumpy but loving father was the glue that kept everything and everybody together. At the very least, he kept Jill's world in order with his MacSweeney-isms, quotable one-liners, which Jill misses terribly. Without her dad she feels as if her tether to her friends and family has been cut. Now her mother is furthering the divide by pursuing this adoption thing, it feels as if Jill is being replaced. To make matters worse her mom has invited the unwed birth mom to stay at the house until the baby is born. Couldn't her mom have just gotten a puppy to keep her company?
