Here Comes the Garbage Barge!

Jonah Winter
Description
The town of Islip in New York needed to get rid of its garbage. 32 TONs of it. The judge said they could not bury it, so some businessmen thought of a cheaper solution: send it to dumping grounds in the North Carolina. Enter the tugboat "Break of Dawn" and a large barge. The large barge was loaded up with garbage and Cap'n Duffy St. Pierre headed south. When two sisters spy the barge on the beach, they alert police. The policeman said, "You can't park that garbage in our harbor." The businessmen sent Cap'n Duffy to New Orleans, Mexico, Texas, even Belize but now that everyone knew about the garbage barge from the TV and papers they wouldn't accept the garbage. Cap'n Duffy had to bring that smelly, smelly garbage back to New York. Finally, a judge decreed that the garbage be burned and the ashes be returned to Islip. This is a fictionalized account of a true event that happened in 1987. Illustrations in the book are photographs of objects made from garbage.
