World War II is getting underway, the Germans are preparing to march on Paris, and life in Europe is changing rapidly. People are closing their windows and shutters, turning their heads down when passing in the street. Music and laughter seems to have gone into hibernation leaving childhood behind for Europe's youth. Marie-Laure feels the change in Paris, as does Werner in Germany. Little do that know how much their lives will change or that destiny will push them together when little else is left.
